Mark Schaller (1962) is an Australian visual artist, he studied fine arts at the Victorian College of the Arts and became a founding member of the renowned Roar Studios in the early 1980s.
Schaller has limitless curiosity and is highly inventive in his selection of materials and his work practices. As Schaller points out, "When I paint, everything else becomes irrelevant. There's no one to tell you what's right or wrong. You can be irrational or rational, emotional or not emotional, sober or conservative. You can be all these things." As we navigate through turbulent times, Schaller provides us with a refreshing, often irreverent, view of ourselves—which is surely salutary.
Today Schaller is regarded as one of Australia’s strongest contemporary mid-career artists and with his unique and colourful expressionistic style, it is easy to see why art consultant Ken McGregor selected him for the more laid back studio version of Art Series’ typically sleek, luxuriant brand of boutique art hotels. In the early days of ROAR there was no way that Schaller could have predicted that he would have a hotel named after him by 2014. His work is sure to receive a further boon with this announcement. In an Australian first, Schaller has already created, and will continue to create, original works for the hotel.
