The still-life paintings of Stuart Dunkel (1952) contain a brilliant combination of meticulous detail and playful whimsy. Whether working on his iconic "mice" paintings with their human emotions or his other, slightly surreal still-lifes, this incredibly talented artist infuses subtle humor into his artwork. This mix of classical realism and contemporary eccentricity has led the artist to great success.
Born in New Jersey, Stuart's began playing classical music and painting at the age of 5. He went on to study music at Boston University, Mannes College of Music, the Juilliard School (Doctorate). He also studied art at the Boston Museum School, Kent State, the Academy of Realist Art, the Seattle Academy of Art and privately with renowned artists.
After a career as a musician playing with top orchestras around the world, Stuart switched to fine art at the age of 42. Dunkel's primary influences come from the Netherlands artists between 1550 and 1720 for their clarity of image and beauty in painting. The surreal aspects of his work may stem from his early fascination with Salvador Dali.
Having become well known around the United States for his small paintings of mice in mischievous situations, Stuart continues to paint with egoless enthusiasm. Beneath their cute exterior, these paintings reflect Stuart's intelligence and creativity in forming great compositions.
Stuart is a member of numerous respected organizations including, The Copley Society, The Art Renewal Center, and The International Guild of Realism. His artwork is shown in galleries and collected by enthusiasts nation wide.
