Maria Sonia Martin (1951) was born in Havana, Cuba. She has been living in the United States since 1962, first in Yonkers, New York and in Miami, Florida since 1968. Maria Sonia received an Associate in Arts Degree from Miami Dade College (1983) and Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art degree from Florida International University (1986). She has received numerous awards including the Betty Laird Perry Purchase Award. She has exhibited her work widely throughout the United States and abroad. Her work is included in the permanent collections of the Frost Art Museum, the Holland and Knight Corporate Art Collection and the Miami Art Guide Magazine (MAG) Corporate Art Collection. Maria Sonia Martin continues to live and work in Miami, Florida.
Her artistic singularity is nothing that she had ever planned. Discovering one’s uniqueness is of the utmost importance if an artist is to do honest work. She’s no longer look to the outside world for inspiration. That which motivates her to create, to express, is within her own being. She use the human figure as the vehicle to express that which is personally within her.
She creates a setting for a viewer to engage in emotional and spiritual ‘conversations’ with the subject in the work. Here, the viewer interacts with another ‘human being’ who is expressing his or her innermost concerns and feelings, freely to those interested. It is a private and intimate meeting, an interchange at a deeper human level which unites two entities by means of common grounds. This exhibit presents a selection of work from Martin’s color series and black & white series consisting of original acrylic, oil, watercolor and ink paintings developed over the last 13 years.
“The artwork that I produce addresses the interior world of man. This interior world is universal to all men and unites us as one people regardless of our cultural or geographical differences. Here, we meet as equal human beings and find understanding and tolerance for the differences that divide us.”
