Artist of the Day, November 18, 2024: Paul Evans, a British painter (landscape) (#2160)

Paul Evans is one of our most successful landscape painters at work in Britain today. His unique and original style has evolved over an artistic career of 45 years and reflects his infectious joy at recording and learning from nature.

Born and raised in rural Sussex, Paul developed a passion for nature at an early age, learning a great deal about the countryside from his grandparents who worked on the land. He had an insatiable appetite to learn all there was to know about our birds, butterflies and plants in the countryside.

His strong work ethic came from his parents and grandparents. To this day, the artist is inspired by his father’s belief that “you only get out of life what you are prepared to put into it.” Paul has poured his whole life into his art and now enjoys the artistic success of time well spent. Between 1972 and 1976 Paul studied children’s book illustration and printmaking at Eastbourne College of Art and Design with tutors Robert Tavener and Trevor Kemp – both renowned artists. “You couldn’t help but be inspired by them and I learnt so much during that time,” says Paul. Whilst at college Paul became involved with the Ralph Lewis Gallery in Brighton’s Lanes. His paintings sold as fast as he could paint them which gave him the confidence to make a living from his paintings. He has done so successfully ever since holding over 65 solo exhibitions and numerous group shows, often selling out within hours.

Paul works in a variety of media including watercolours, inks and acrylics. He also enjoys making etchings and linocuts which are mainly inspired by East Anglia’s landscape and coast, the Sussex Downs, the Kent Weald and Cornwall’s rugged coast and moorland. His paintings explore favourite locations throughout the year, capturing a sense of place, time, season and light. Paul has always been highly motivated, working long hours but with a passion for his subject. Over the years, he has always been enthusiastic to support many good causes including hospices, wildlife charities and church fundraising projects.

In 1988, Paul established his first gallery in Alfriston, East Sussex and then moved from his home county to Suffolk in 1992. He then opened Lavenham Contemporary Gallery, selling his books, cards, prints and original paintings. In addition to his exhibitions, Paul’s work has also been reproduced commercially. Over 500 images have been used for greetings cards, calendars and limited edition prints by several large publishers, including Aquarelle, Kingsmead Publications, Royle Publications and Royal Doulton. His work has been acquired by collectors worldwide, especially in America, Japan, Australia and Europe, as well as his large and loyal following closer to home.
