Artist of the Day, November 6, 2020: Jasper Léonard, an Belgian artist, photographer (#1139)

Jasper Léonard (1985) is an artist based in Antwerp, Belgium. He discovered photography as a teenager. At the time, he had no idea that professional photography would evolve as his passion. He achieved a master in Visual arts at Saint Lucas in 2010 and has since been active in different artistic projects.

Jasper got an extra course in photography at Syntra and became a freelance photographer. As a starting photographer, he used his time to create his first "time lapse" projects. This is how he discovered moving image.

Producing commercial videos and photos for a widespread variety of companies, Léonard experimented with still and moving images for the last couple of years. Learning about light and matter in all its glory, Léonard creates awzsomeness all where he goes... drinking Westmalle tripel as he walks day and night over the planes of this mortal realm.

Restructuring reality seems to be a red line throughout his artistic oeuvre. Working with multiple exposures and redesigning his own lenses Léonard feels the need to reshape the way reality is exposed.

The The Urban Lens: tilt-shift technique
The tilt-shift technique mimics the type of sharpness you can see in macro photography. This is why our mind says, “wait a minute, this must be something really tiny.” I really love the fact that you can fool your mind pretty easily.

For New York Resized, he made use of some classic tilt-shift lenses, as well as a homemade tilt-shift adaptor, which made it possible to use a very large range of camera angles. After finishing the New York book, he even realized that his home-made adaptor works better than the actual lenses.

Junction series:
Searching for a way to allow a factor of chance in his photographic language, Léonard started experimenting with film camera's. By exposing a single piece of film multiple times, Léonard chooses to overwrite multiple moments in space and time. Allowing a stochastic factor in these 'Junction' series. Creating more than a recording of a moment but a junction of two or more moments, overlapping each other in a very unpredictable way. This series is created using multiple cameras's at once, by doing so the photographer tries not to account for the junctions made in this series.

Fractal horizons Series
Jasper Léonard is fascinated by the way light leaves a mark on film from wich images emerge.
. His research showed him a whole new way of looking at the world. By exposing light to a single frame multiple times he is able to create links trough space and time. Focusing on the horizon as a circular shape, Léonard tries to comprehend and grasp the world surrounding him. This series was created with large and medium format film type's.

In 2012, he became one of "Antwerp's city photographers".
In 2016, he released his first and second photo book Antwerp Resized "Antwerp Resized" And Belgium resized
In 2016 He won the gold award for "best event video" at the "Belgian corporate video festival". With the Rock Werchter 2015 Aftermovie.
