Lucia Dibi is an Italian emerging artist, painter. Here is her statement:
I was born in Milan, I graduated from the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Painting, and later specialized in New Art Technologies. Before fully dedicating myself to artistic practice, I worked as an illustrator and interior decorator.
Through my work and my daily actions, I try to capture and create a mapping of what surrounds me. The city draws me in: its daily, random banality and its architectural corners are where I find my subjects.
Initially, I included religious icons (which had accompanied me for years in my work as an illustrator) but suspended them in their usual way of inhabiting space. By decontextualizing them, they helped me create new meanings, new ideas, new relationships, in an attempt to redefine reality in its complexity.
Now, I am more interested in seeking authenticity through spaces and light. Individuals change as they live, and so do urban environments. This is a constant flow, and I believe that it’s the combination of all these factors that creates authenticity.
It’s very important for me to gather information from everywhere. I have a large, ever-growing archive of photos I’ve taken of subjects that deserve to be painted, some because they connect with me on a personal level, others for their composition. I like to see a reflection of myself, even if just a small part, in what I paint. Perhaps the common thread is that these subjects are never static but always move toward something else, and painting is their means to do so.
I’m not interested in translating the language of painting into verbal language. I have never intentionally loaded my paintings with metaphors or meanings; every element I insert in a piece stems from a purely formal need.
I try to combine my pictorial experimentation with technology, fully aware that digital multimedia has altered my perceptual and aesthetic landscape, allowing me to discover new coordinates and new information. In fact, the first phase of my work is photography: it allows me to capture fragments of urban history in digital files, which I decompose, simplify, and reduce to just a few lines, giving them autonomy and a silent path, which I then reinterpret through painting with acrylic colors mixed with various material components.
