Artist of the Day, October 3, 2026 : Gil Elvgren, an American illustrator/pin-up artist (#2648)

Gil Elvgren (1914–1980) was a premier American commercial illustrator celebrated for his definitive mid-century lifestyle and calendar art. After completing his training at the American Academy of Art in 1936, he joined Chicago’s prominent Stevens and Gross agency, where he became a protégé of Haddon Sundblom.

Elvgren established his career building highly successful commercial campaigns for major publishers like Louis F. Dow and Brown & Bigelow, the latter spanning from 1945 to 1972. Operating from a dedicated home studio in Winnetka, Illinois, he utilized a structured production process involving photography, custom props, and technical assistance. His precise, vibrant style attracted a roster of premium corporate clients, including Coca-Cola, General Electric, Sealy Mattress Company, and The Saturday Evening Post.
