Artist of the day, September 27: Francesco Ciccolella, an Austrian illustrator and graphic artist

Francesco Ciccolella (1990) is one of the most internationally successful Austrian illustrators of his generation. Born in Salzburg, from 2010 to 2015 he studied graphic design at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. Ciccolella lives and works in Vienna, where he draws illustrations for such international media as The Guardian, Die Zeit, Die Welt, Der Spiegel, The New York Times, and brands such as Google and IBM. His works tell stories, communicate ideas and condense complex themes into pithy, visual metaphors. He composes semiotically ingenious illustrations at the interface of image and language, complexity, and everyday banality that communicate on a poetic level with their viewers. In self-staged projects and experimental works Ciccolella researches the medium of illustration off the beaten track of commercial contents and formulates visual comments on socially relevant issues and current events.
