An interview with the illustrator Sehee Chae (Pie)
"I am Sehee Chae or Chae Se Hee; my artist name is Pie. I've been doing illustration since 2015.
Pie is the alter ego of Sehee Chae, an illustrator also known as Pie who's based in the South Korean city of Ansan. While we're not sure why Pie is her artistic alias, we got to know more about her wide ranging portfolio, which has incorporated book covers, K-pop commissions, vinyl record sleeves and even reinterpretations of Alice in Wonderland.
It's been a busy year for Sehee, starting with her feature in the hefty Kaleidoscope, a compendium of the most exciting artists working in illustrative storytelling today, and for which she also contributed the cover. A high honour for a young artist, but well-deserved for her textured and personal, emotive pieces.
Most of Sehee's work is based in book illustration, and looking at her work is like stepping into another world populated by introspective adolescents, halcyon landscapes and Korean folklore.
Her art somehow manages to be attractive but not cute, enigmatic but arrestingly coloured. Enjoy our selection of Pie's best works, accompanied by Sehee's thoughts on her portfolio to date.
