Artist of the Day, April 28, 2022: Cesar Barroso, a Brazilian photographer (#1557)

I normally don't use friends at the Artist of the day! Today is the exception. Please meet a colleague: Cesar Barroso

"My art has roots in the art of Karl Blossfeldt, Imogen Cunningham and Edward Weston, who one hundred years ago took seeds, flowers, plants and roots as their models. Instead of the "realism" of color, black and white photography favors spectacular, evocative, enigmatic and disturbing images. It clearly has qualities which are very compelling. The shapes, lines and textures created by light on the botanicals is what I aim to capture, since I began to photograph in Brazil. And that same drive is what makes me continue the search in Florida, a place so rich in expressions of the botanical world."

Cesar Barroso is a member of the Brazilian Photographic Art Association, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Artist of the Day, April 27, 2022: Jean-François Cooke and Pierre Sasseville, Québec sculptors (#1556)

Jean-François Cooke and Pierre Sasseville work jointly under the name of Cooke-Sasseville since the beginning of the early 2000s. Over time, they took part in a large number of solo and collective exhibitions both on the national and international scene.

Jean-François Cooke was born in Chicoutimi in 1974. Pierre Sasseville was born in Quebec in 1978. They both hold a master's degree in visual arts from Laval University. Jean-François Cooke and Pierre Sasseville have been working together since 2000. They have presented their work in some fifteen solo exhibitions in addition to taking part in numerous events and collective exhibitions in Quebec and abroad. This creative journey has allowed them to develop a unique approach, reflecting reflections on the condition of the artist, alienation, advertising culture and the relationship of art to banality, which has been the subject of a sustained media reception. Indeed, many critics have written about their work, thus helping to make it known to the public, while multiplying the avenues of reflection allowing it to be placed in the contemporary artistic context and, more generally, in the cultural context of Quebec. The duo experiments with all kinds of materials including aluminum, bronze, stainless steel, concrete and electrostatic paint. Through humor and provocation, they tackle various subjects such as sexuality, religion, politics or even the art market
