Hannah Starkey (1971) is a contemporary British photographer who specializes in staged settings of women in city environments imparting a narrative quality to the individuals within them. Born in Belfast, Starkey studied photography and film at Napier University, Edinburgh (1992–1995) and photography at the Royal College of Art, London (1996–1997). She now lives and works in London.
She has said of her own photographs that they are “explorations of everyday experiences and observations of inner city life from a female perspective.” The women featured in them are actresses and anonymous strangers whom she asks to pose, often set against reflections and strategically illuminated
Her more recent images have an almost theatrical character, often depicting women in staged settings, for example with a Coca-Cola in a pub or inside a public lavatory.
Starkey’s works can be found in the collections of the Tate Gallery in London, the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin, and the Seattle Art Museum, among others.
