Artist of the Day, July 14, 2023: Cristina Tufiño, a Puerto Rican ceramist, photographer (#1853)

Cristina Tufiño (1982) was born in Puerto Rico. In 2007 she graduated from Rhode Island School of Design in Providence with a BFA in Photography. She continued her education at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and in 2013 she received MFA in sculpture from the University of Pennsylvania.

Various aspects of the human condition inspire the artist. In 2017 in the exhibition titled LISTE, she presented a series of sculptures that examine the themes of the human body and experience. The objects and sphinx made out of the most basic materials, such as clay, sand, and cardboard boxes, are juxtaposed with jewelry made from modern debris. Here the artist asks questions about the notions of gender and class in contemporary society.
Cristina Tufiño Unique Style

Over the years, the artist has utilized a quite peculiar style in which she creates. The objects that catch her eye and fire her imagination will most certainly find themselves inside her studio. In a way, the artist herself has become a hoarder, filling her studio with all kinds of materials and objects. For Tufino, another side of her work is a collector of information, as every single object in her vast collection has its own personal history to reveal. Hoarding itself became the inspiration for one of her series, which came about after reading the book The Hoarders: Material Deviance in Modern American Culture.
