Artist of the Day, January 19, 2026 : Washington Maguetas, a Brazilian painter, sculptor, artist, poet (#2463)

Washington Luiz da Costa Maguetas, (1942) who signs his works as W. Maguetas, is a painter, sculptor, artist, poet and teacher; a member of the Brazilian Impressionist movement, also called Tropical Impressionism.

As a child, in 1950 he performed his first artistic works creating clay sculptures. Already in 1959, Maguetas won a scholarship; in the same year he participates in the 25th Paulista Hall of Fine Arts with the painting "Mass in the donation of the lands of São Sebastião dos Coqueirais"

In the 1960s, as a teacher, he began to teach painting and arts techniques. At this same time Magueta projects different sculptures and is in charge of assisting the artist Oscar Valzacchi in the painting of churches.

Since 1962, in the city of Novo Horizonte, there are two of the most important public artistic works of Washington Maguetas; the Luminosa Fountain and the Saints that adorn the dome of the Mother Church of St. Joseph; both attractions located on the outskirts of Dr. Square. Euclydes Cardoso Castilho. Since the Light Source was developed through a project that began in 1959, when Maguetas, at the age of 17, was chosen as the sculptor by Euclydes Castilho, who after a trip to the European continent wished that his city had a beautiful public source, of European inspiration.

Between the 1970s and 1980s he participates in different artistic exhibitions held in Brazil and, from 1988, begins the international dissemination of his work at events such as a solo exhibition in Caracas, Venezuela, the Osaka World Fair and the donation of his works to the Atami Museum, both of which are the last in Japan.

Maguetas is considered the creator of the so-called Trimaism, which consists of making use of three or more technical resources on the conventional support of the canvas or panel, where the visual aspect is accompanied by a poetry that is always related to the works, in addition to the non-commitment to the theories of the existing artistic schools.

His works stand out the still life, typically Brazilian landscapes, portraits and interiors, and the latter works specifically the works that represent scenes of the domestic daily life; in all ends up making use of the game formed by the effects of light and shadow.

The works of Washington Maguetas caught the attention of international counterfeiters. In 2013, after discovering for himself the fraud of his works on the internet, Maguetas accused a Chinese sales website of harming his artistic work, since he sold counterfeit copies of his paintings for a price well below the real market value; in addition the artist also stated that such a fact violated his clear copyright and financial rights. In addition to Maguetas's works, the site sold reproductions such as those of Van Gogh and Monet for modest prices. After the complaint, the website deleted from its database the works of Washington Maguetas.

Since 2018 the city of Taquaritinga, on the anniversary day of Maguetas' birth, celebrates the "Municipal Day of the Impressionist Artist".

It also received an invitation from the São Paulo State Department of Education to participate in the ‘Brazilian Painters’ project; the objective of the project is to encourage in students the development of artistic knowledge.
