Stephen McMennamy was born in Marietta Georgia, but his formative years took place in jungles of Southeast Asia. when he was 2, the family packed up and we moved to the Philippines where he spent some of the most tropical/volcanic/humid/rice-consuming years of his life.
After that they returned to a slightly less exotic existence back in the states. cut to high-school where he quickly realized that he wasn't going to follow in the engineering footsteps of his father and grandfather. Pursuing the path along the right side of his brain led him to the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) where he spent some time exploring the world of fine art, but ultimately he decided to shift gears and explore the world of fine advertising. This brought him back to Atlanta where he entered the Creative Circus as a designer, but exited an art director. His first real ad job where he was lucky enough to work for Jerry Cronin that took him, under his meaty wing for several years where they ended up doing two agency stints together. He can’t say he learned everything about advertising from Jerry, but he definitely learned everything good about advertising from Jerry.
His surreal photos are not Photoshop inventions. He looks for simple backgrounds, takes two photographs, and then carefully arranges them together. The early #combophoto project shots were taken with an iPhone, but he recently bought a new camera to improve the quality, and occasionally uses a drone.
“It’s really just from looking around and seeing what things are out in the world might make for an interesting fit or what would make for a nice contrast once combined,” McMennamy told. “As far as process, it’s just a matter of me hunting things down and aiming for the cleanest shot possible.”
