Artist of the day, November 11-12: Eiko Ishioka, Japanese art director, costume designer, and graphic designer.

Eiko Ishioka (石岡 瑛子),(1938 –2012) was a part of a rare breed of revolutionaries—a woman whose wide-ranging multimedia accomplishments in the late 1960s and 1970s jolted the Japanese cultural establishment. Recognized as Japan’s premiere art director and graphic designer, her more recent activities in production and costume design for film, theater, and opera have brought her continued acclaim. Through active participation, self-awareness, and stylishness, her multiple design tactics continue to lead to a scope of assignments for which she has received numerous accolades.

• Noted for her advertising campaigns for the Japanese boutique chain Parco

• Most acclaimed designer in Japan. Designed the official poster for the Expo 1970 in Japan.

• She was the Director of Costume Design for the 2008 Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony

• Won a Grammy Award for the design of a Miles Davis record cover.

• In 1988, she was nominated for two Tony Awards for the Broadway version of "M. Butterfly" as Best Scenic Designer and Best Costume Designer.

• Member of the jury at the Cannes Film Festival in 1996.

• She attended the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. She got her start in advertising with the cosmetics company Shiseido, and struck out on her own a decade later.

• She designed uniforms for the Canadian, Japanese, Spanish and Swiss teams at the 2002 Winter Olympics, as well as the logo for the Houston (Texas) Rockets.

• She was honored with a Google doodle on July 12, 2017, which would have been her 79th birthday.

• Her father was a graphic designer, and warned her about trying to succeed in Japan's male-dominated world of advertising.

• She Designed the Tony-nominated costumes for ‘Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark’

• She made 4 films with director Tarsem Singh, including ‘The Cell’ & ‘Mirror Mirror’

• Ishioka & Francis Ford Coppola knew each other for 2 decades before he hired her for ‘Bram Stoker’s Dracula’
