Artist of the day, March 4, 2020: Yves Trudeau, a French Canadian sculptor, painter, educator (#933)

Yves Trudeau (1930 – 2017) was a French Canadian sculptor, painter, educator, and a prominent figure in 20th-century art in Quebec, especially public art.

Yves Trudeau studied at the École des Beaux-Arts de Montréal and began his career in the 1950s. At first, concentrating on bronze sculptures, he later incorporated wood and iron into his works.

In 1960, he founded the Association des sculpteurs du Québec (today the Conseil de la sculpture du Québec), a professional association for Quebec sculptors. He created numerous significant public sculptures and took part in significant group and individual shows throughout Canada and Europe.

During his career, Yves Trudeau received several awards and scholarships from the Québec Research and Creation Assistance Program and was supported by the Ministère de l’Éducation. For his outstanding contribution to the arts, the Université du Québec à Montréal awarded him a certificate (1984). This recognition leads him to teach. For several years he held a position as professor of sculpture in the Department of Visual Arts at the same institution
