Lucas Maassen (1975) lives and works in Eindhoven, the Netherlands.
After studying at the Design Academy Eindhoven he started his career as an independent conceptual designer.
His work has been exhibited in museums all over the world such as MoMA New York, Grand Palais Paris, Vitra Design Museum Weil am Rhein, New Museum New York, Taiwan Design Museum Taipei, Museum of Art and Design New York, Centraal Museum Utrecht and the van Abbe museum Eindhoven.
Besides his design practice Maassen teaches at the Social Design Master program at the Design Academy Eindhoven and at the Academy of Art Communication and Design inTilburg.
Key to the work of Lucas Maassen is a process of validation through apparent perception. To what extent are aspects of scale and matter fundamental to determine and pronounce typological objects? In a highly playful manner, Maassen manipulates the parameters of conceiving objects; deriving from recognizable functionality into a fictional realm of attributed economic value as limited or as matter, both effectively quantitative realities, he qualitatively measures these up to apparent conditions of the imaginary.
Lucas Maassen has employed his 3 sons, Thijme (9), Julian (7) and Maris (7). His Sons are responsible for the paint job of the furniture which is build in the factory. They get paid 1 Euro for every piece of furniture they paint. As agreed by the contract they signed. Due to Dutch child labour laws it is only possible for Thijme, Julian and Maris to work for 3 hours a week. As a result of this the production speed has became a crucial factor in the process.
