Lisa Shahno is a Russian fashion designer based in Moscow who creates clothing using high tech materials and geometric forms.
Using the language of abstract two-dimensional graphical surfaces, Lisa explores the space between fashion design and art. Since her first collection “Squaring the square” such simple forms as squares, rectangles and triangles have been the main structural units of her pieces and the media of her ideas.
Rejecting the stereotypes of the traditional-cut method, the design process always begins with an abstract non-utilitarian idea, whose shadow we glimpse and from which we build our mythology. Having no connection to the body or wear, it is only partially adapted to the human experience (which people call “reality”), supplementing this illusory world with a fresh look on clothes and on things in general.
shahno’s most recent collection, titled ‘hexapelerine’ features an unusual form known as a hexaflexagon. the design is stitched with orange-pink and green dayglo thread which glows in fluorescent light. ‘squaring the square’ is a previous collection by shahno which is based on a geometric problem. each piece is made using rectangular pieces of various lengths and widths ranging from rectangles to squares. the pieces are sewn together and bonded in different orders to create an array of forms.
