Artist of the Day, October 23, 2024: Olivier Strebelle, a Belgian sculptor and ceramist (#2144)

Olivier Strebelle (1927 –2017) was a Belgian sculptor and ceramist. Know for his monumental works, usually in bronze, present in Belgium as in Germany, Italy, Israel, Switzerland, Russia, Singapore and the United States of America.

Born in Uccle and son of the painter Rodolphe Strebelle, he initially studied and worked as a ceramist at the Ecole nationale supérieure d'architecture et des arts décoratifs de La Cambre in Brussels. He founded in 1949, together with Pierre Alechinsky, Reinhoud d'Haese, Christian Dotremont and Michel Olyff, Les Ateliers du Marais which became the operational center of the CoBrA art movement.

In 1953 he became a professor of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, however the victory of the prestigious Belgian Prix de Rome in 1956 pushed him to abandon pottery in favor of sculpture. A few years later, in 1961, he left Belgium to accept the post of professor at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver; he remained in the new continent until the 1980s, starting in 1968, he taught at some institutions in the United States such as the University of Iowa, the University of Colorado in Boulder, the University of Atlanta and that of Philadelphia.

In 1987 he returned to Brussels and became a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences, Letters and Fine Arts of Belgium. A prolific artist for more than 65 years, his works are part of both private collections and public installations, for which he is best known. Among the great works of the last period can be mentioned The Abduction of Europa (French, L'Enlèvement d'Europe) made for the 2002 Moscow European Square and the Athletes Alley made for the 2008 Olympics and conceived as a gift from Belgium to the city of Beijing.
