The master Estanislao Contreras Colima, (1936) was born in Zacoalco de Torres, Jalisco. His creative talent has dedicated him mainly to sculpture and teaching. In his sculptural work he has used various materials, although he prefers stone and wood.
In 1956 at the age of 18 he studied sculpture at the technical level at the School of Plastic Arts of the University of Guadalajara, one of his teachers being the sculptor Miguel Miramontes who trained him with academic studies of the Mexican nationalist school. In 1957, the French sculptor and teacher Oliver Seguin came to Guadalajara to teach in the same school and introduced him to the world and philosophy of mid-twenty-century sculptors. From then on, Estanislao Contreras is creating his own language and his own plastic values, with them he created pieces that from their conception were studied morphologically, until achieving a synthesis, an analogy or an abstraction. His current work is abstract full of geometric, natural and organic elements.
He later did the Bachelor of Visual Arts and continued his teaching craft at the same school now called Campus Sta. Mary of Grace. He was a master of sculpture at the technical level first and then at the bachelor’s level, between both stages he taught classes for more than 30 years.
He has participated in a significant number of individual and group exhibitions, national and international, he has several public works in the state. Two of his sculptures are part of the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City. He won two Jalisco Awards and four honorable mentions at INBA Sculpture Biennials. The “Silver Brush” was awarded to the Art Excellence in the Visual Arts, in Jalisco. He has been recognized by the Fifty-Seventh Legislature of the Congress of the State of Jalisco, granted for his outstanding career and valuable contribution to artistic and cultural wealth. He was an intern to “Artist with Career” in 1996 and in 2008 by CONACULTA.
Estanislao Contreras belongs to the generation of sculptors of the rupture or the avant-garde, and until now he continues in the search for the three-dimensional form, passionate about daily work, remaining in force in the artistic sphere of Jalisco.
