Tomoko Miho (1931–2012) was an acclaimed Japanese-American graphic designer and recipient of the 1993 AIGA Medal, recognized for her mastery of spatial relationships. After graduating with an industrial design degree and studying design frameworks across Europe, she built a distinguished career in the United States.
Between the 1960s and 1980s, Miho held key leadership roles at prestigious design firms, including serving as Creative Director at George Nelson Associates, Inc. She also designed for Herman Miller and the Center for Advanced Research in Design, which served major clients like the Container Corporation of America. In the 1980s, she founded Tomoko Miho & Co., partnering with elite cultural and commercial institutions such as MoMA, the Smithsonian Institution, and Aveda.
Deeply influenced by the Swiss International Typographic Style, Miho is widely celebrated for her prize-winning architectural posters for New York and Chicago. Today, her acclaimed corporate and cultural portfolio is preserved in permanent collections at the Museum of Modern Art, the Library of Congress, and the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, cementing her legacy as a pillar of modern graphic design.
