John Currin (1962) is an American painter based in New York City. He is most recognised for his technically proficient satirical figurative paintings that explore controversial sexual and societal topics.
His primary contribution to contemporary art lies in his calculated weaponization of technical mastery against late twentieth-century ideological orthodoxy. When he emerged in the early 1990s, the market heavily favored conceptual, anti-formalist expressions. Currin executed a high-risk counter-strategy, reviving the fastidious oil-glazing and grisaille methods of Northern Renaissance and Baroque masters, then applying this elite execution to culturally "debased" source materials like lifestyle advertisements and pornography.
