Artist of the Day, September 22, 2026 : Rosmarie Tissi, a Swiss graphic artist, type designer (#2638)

 Rosmarie Tissi (1937) represents a transformative force in the evolution of modern graphic design, successfully bridging the gap between rigorous structure and vibrant individual expression. After completing her education at the School of Applied Art in Zurich, she sought an environment that would match her creative ambition. This pursuit led her to the studio of Sigi Odermatt, a designer celebrated for his non-conformist approach to traditional industry conventions. What began as a traditional apprenticeship quickly matured into a powerhouse professional alliance, culminating in the establishment of their joint studio, Odermatt + Tissi, which redefined collaborative design excellence for several decades.

Throughout her extensive career, Tissi shifted the boundaries of visual communication by transitioning away from the rigid constraints of grid-based Modernist design toward a more dynamic, expressive aesthetic. Her work is characterized by an intuitive mastery of distinctive proportions, unconventional layouts, and a bold command of color. This unique methodology earned her widespread international acclaim, highlighted by prestigious accolades such as the gold medal at the 11th International Poster Biennial in Warsaw and the Swiss Grand Award for Design in 2018. Her corporate and cultural portfolio reflects a rare capability to deliver striking visual impact while maintaining absolute functional clarity.

Tissi's enduring legacy is also cemented through her innovative contributions to typography, most notably exemplified by her 1974 typeface, Sinaloa. This geometric, logotype-style font utilizes a signature striped stroke within each character, achieving a sophisticated balance between high visual engagement and crisp legibility. By consistently challenging established design norms through a lens of disciplined experimentation, Tissi created a body of work that remains highly influential for contemporary brand strategists and corporate communication specialists worldwide.
