Artist of the Day, October 28, 2026 : Ju Ming, a Taiwanese sculptor (#2663)

Ju Ming  (朱銘),  (1938 – 2023) was an internationally acclaimed Taiwanese sculptor who masterfully bridged traditional craftsmanship with contemporary fine art. Born in Miaoli County, Taiwan, his formal education was rooted in traditional apprenticeship rather than conventional academia. He began his artistic journey as a teenager, training in woodcarving under the guidance of Lee Chinchuan, and later elevated his practice through a prestigious secondary apprenticeship with the modernist master Yang Yuyu. This unique educational foundation allowed him to develop an expert command over diverse media, ranging from traditional wood and bronze to modern stainless steel, styrofoam, and foam rubber.

Throughout his distinguished career, Ju Ming achieved extraordinary professional milestones that established his global reputation. He first captured widespread attention in the 1970s through a landmark solo exhibition at the National Museum of History in Taipei and was subsequently named one of Taiwan's Ten Outstanding Youths. By 1983, his influence reached international markets, gaining critical acclaim in New York City, Europe, and across Asia. His primary accomplishments include the creation of the internationally celebrated Taichi series and the vibrant The Living World series, which showcased his ability to capture both spiritual discipline and modern societal dynamics. Furthermore, he cemented his legacy by funding and establishing the Ju Ming Museum outside Taipei to preserve fine art for the public

.Ju Ming will be remembered as a visionary pioneer who transformed the landscape of modern sculpture by fusing traditional Asian philosophies with Western modernism. His legacy rests on his ability to carve fluid, dynamic motion into heavy, monumental forms, redefining how movement is expressed in three-dimensional art. Scholars and enthusiasts alike will continuously celebrate him for his profound cultural contributions, his entrepreneurial spirit in arts philanthropy, and his relentless dedication to creative innovation
