Artist of the day, March 3-4: Yulia Ustinova, Russian crochet artist, sculptor

Yulia Ustinova is a Russian artist who uses the art of crocheting to replicate famous artworks or to arrange new shapes totally made by her. She has been formally trained in art and has taken her training along with using the old craft of crochet to sculpture her ‘big women’ or in Russian, “tetki” – it means uneducated and ungroomed women. She was born in an artistic family. Her mother is a sculptor, her father is a book illustrator. Her mother is very good at handiwork, so she has taught her how to crochet when she was 5 years old. At 11 she entered a professional artistic school learning the Academy of pictorial arts. There she used to practice painting, graphics, sculpture, and during my spare time – crochet. She crocheted everything – clothes, simple toys, things for interiors. She don`t know exactly how, but when she was already working as an illustrator, an idea occurred to her. She have combined sculpture and love for crochet

  12. What a talent.....no, I hate that word...she spent years learning how to do this so expertly. What expression she gives to all of her figures. So heartwarming to see she went for the more realistic side of life, and not the photoshop ideal.

  66. Buenas tardes.
