Artist of the day, January 5-6: Dave Calver, American illustrator

Dave Calver is a  graduate of Rhode Island School of Design. New Yorkers are well familiar with Dave's distinct illustrations: His iconic snow-people have been used for years to promote The Lincoln Center B.I.D.'s Annual Winter's Eve event. Strap-hangers' commutes have been enlivened by Dave's three MTA Art Posters. One of these, "NYC Bling" went on to receive a Silver Medal from the Society of Illustrators. .

Recently relocated to Palm Springs from Rochester, NY, Dave continues to produce new illustration work as well as gallery pieces. He's also hard at work on a series of character shoulder bags, a graphic novel and a horror film.

Dave Calver regularly makes it into lists of the best living illustrators. And, in a career spanning 40 years, his unique works have featured on the pages of Esquire, GQ, and the New York Times magazine.

But this personable, down-to-Earth artist shows no signs of slowing up. In fact, he says a recent change of surroundings has helped inspire his latest movie and graphic novel work.

Looking back, Dave says: “At that time, NYC was a funky, dangerous, and exciting place to be! There were lots of artists living there, and there was always some great oddball event going on somewhere.”
