In 2013 she was selected for the Contemporary Photography Program, an educational project of the Nuevo León photograph library. In May 2019, got a Certification of Visual Arts at the San Agustín Center in Etla, Oaxaca. In 2015, 2017 and 2020, she had solo shows at Machete Gallery (CDMX). Her work was part of several collective exhibitions.
She was honoured with different awards, among them: SWAB/ESPRONCEDA Art Prize (2021); 2nd State Prize of Arts of Nueva Leon Arts Center, Monterrey (2020), the scholarship for Young Creators (2020-21 and 2015-16)
Influenced by Isamu Noguchi and Andy Goldsworthy, Paula often draws and meditates before creating her etchings, which evoke tree fractals and river tessellations
Paula who crafts her inimitable works with a diamond-tipped engraver, selected the familiar countertop material due to its ubiquitous beauty in daily life.
Cortazar finds stones in the mountains and streams near her studio-home in Parque la Huasteca, rescuing them, she explains, to share their journey.
Patterns seem to bring a feeling of comfort to our senses: they help us decipher and process the complex living structures, lines, and shapes that surround us. Paula Cortazar interprets the hidden patterns in nature, of a tree or a river, through drawing and carving on stone. These repeated actions give rise to organically shaped stone pieces, reminding us that a small fraction of the mountain is present and that each fraction of her work is a part of the whole.
