Artist of the Day, March 19, 2025: Haruyuki Uchida, a Japanese sculptor (#2236)

 As one of Japan’s leading sculptors, Haruyuki Uchida (1952) has had numerous solo exhibitions in Kyoto, Tokyo and Osaka and been the recipient of many awards including the Teijirou Nakahara Prize in 1998 and the Grand Prize at the International Art Exhibition of Japan in 1984. In 1997, Uchida was the recipient of the Grand Prize at the Exhibition of Contemporary Japanese Sculpture and has exhibited in and been a guest Curator for the Setouchi Art Triennale and the Echigo Tsumari Triennale on several occasions.

Uchida’s works are held in internationally recognised Japanese collections including The Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo; The Museum of Modern Art Kamakura, Kanagawa; The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto; Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum; Hakone Open-Air Museum; Sapporo Sculpture Garden; Asago Sculpture Park; Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art; and Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art.

He is also represented numerous in public and private international collections including Olympic Park (Korea); Taipei Fine Arts Festival (Taiwan); The National Museum of Contemporary Art (Korea); the Holmes a Court Collection (Australia); and Canberra International Airport (Australia).

Uchida has exhibited at Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi seven times since 2006, Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe seven times since 2008, Sculpture by the Sea, Aarhus in 2009 and ‘Sculpture Rocks’ in Sydney in 2021.
