Artist of the Day, January 9, 2026 : COVID emerging artists (#2455)

"Encontrado esperanza a través del arte" (Finding Hope through Art)

"Finding Hope through Art" showcases the remarkable young emerging folk artists of Oaxaca, Mexico. The contest's theme was inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic's enormous challenges: terror of (and in some instances actual) severe illness, isolation, and pronounced economic hardship due to paralyzed tourism. With great anticipation, FOFA (Friends of Oaxacan Folk Art) volunteers returned to Oaxaca, to sponsor "Young Artists" competition, in close and invaluable collaboration with the Oaxaca State Museum of Folk Art, especially Maestro Carlomagno Pedro Martinez, Director and Fernando Pedro Fabian, Head of Planning and Logistics.

FOFA's adaptation to the Pandemic
At the pandemic's outset, FOFA focused on helping 165 young emerging artists by celebrating their art and encouraging continued creation. They invited them to submit a photo of a piece, and how they coped. 138 artesanos participated, many with stupendous works that resulted in remote sales.
