Artist of the day, July 29, 2020: Marta Colvin Andrade, a Chilian sculptor (#1054)

Marta Colvin Andrade (1907–1995) was a Chilian sculptor.

After the 1939 earthquake, Marta Colvin settled in Santiago and had the opportunity to study at the School of Fine Arts at the University of Chile that same year until 1945. Her sculptors were Julio Antonio Vásquez and Lorenzo Domínguez.

In 1943, she was appointed assistant to the Julio Antonio Vásquez Sculpture Workshop at the School of Fine Arts of the University of Chile. In 1950 she was appointed assistant professor at the Sculpture Workshop of the master Vásquez, and in 1957 she assumed as full professor, a position she served until 1972.

Between 1948 and 1949, on a scholarship from the French Government, she traveled to France to continue her training at the Grand Chaumiere Academy with the sculptors Henri Laurens, Ossip Zadkine and Etienne Martin. She learned about new sculptural trends through the works of Constantin Brancusi and Hans Arp. Similarly, she took courses in Art History at the Louvre, taught by Professor Jean Cassou, and in Aesthetics at the Sorbonne, University of Paris, with Professor Sourieu.

Between 1951 and 1953, she was awarded a scholarship by the British Council to study at the Slade School of the University of London, England, where she worked with the sculptor F. E. Mac William. Fund<2FEMININE> in her career was the contact she had with the sculptor Henry Moore, attending his workshop weekly. She developed a large part of her work in France, where she resided for more than thirty years successfully integrating into the international artistic environment, represented by the Galerie de France, in Paris.

Marta Colvin's talent was recognized worldwide by obtaining awards at important events in Europe, Asia, the United States and South America and the location of her sculptures in different countries.

For her figure and relevance in the history of Chilean art, she was awarded the National Art Prize in 1970.

Between 2008 and 2010, through a DIBAM heritage project, the organization and conservation of the Marta Colvin Fund was carried out, making it officially available in April 2010 in the Museum Library, for the researchers' consultation; You can also access to review its content in the Fund Guide.
