Artist of the Day, May 28, 2022: Aude Pariset, a French artist (#1580)

Born in Versailles, France, Aude Pariset (1983) lives and works in Berlin. She will present a solo exhibition at Sandy Brown, Berlin, later this year.

Aude Pariset uses photography, sculpture, and installation to challenge the conventions of image production and reception in the digital age. By culling images and objects from advertising, consumer products like cosmetics, technological devices, and the fashion industry, Pariset creates digital collages that both highlight the manipulative nature of media and subvert it. Pariset often extends beyond two-dimensional representation. In her 2014 exhibition, she responded directly to the Kunstverein Nürnberg’s architecture to design a multimedia installation that included windsurfing sails replaced with images printed on transparent fabric, photographs, and advertisement banners. Whatever material she uses, Pariset works to disrupt the intended function of commercial images.

Through diverse means, Pariset’s current body of work conceptually engages notions of projection and “exoticism”, and its relation to “the ability to conceive otherwise” as described by ethnographer and poet Victor Segalen in his Essay on Exoticism. Segalen’s notes suggest a definition of selfhood formed in connection to the constantly questionable borders of otherness. The exhibition draws a parallel between this condition of mind and to the experience of “traveling” virtually.
