Artist of the Day, June 14, 2025 : Marius van Dokkum, a Dutch illustrator, cartoonist (#2305)

The paintings of Marius van Dokkum (1957) include portraits, sill life's and general subjects. The general subjects mostly concern people portrayed in their own surroundings. These characters come across as likeable, in spite of their many idiosyncrasies.

"You should become an illustrator", was what they said at the Academy in Kampen. This proved to be an accurate assessment. Marius had entered the academy to learn the techniques: working with models, with oils, watercolors and pastel, but most of all to learn how to visualises his stories.

Van Dokkum is a storyteller, always searching for ways to convey his impressions in an anecdotal manner. His sense of humor is frequently reminiscent of the 17th Century tradition of Jan Steen and the brothers Adrian and Isack van Ostade; waggish but with a serious message here and there. This social comment and sense of perspective has characterise many Dutch artists throughout the centuries.

In 2015, Van Dokkum exhibited at the Stadsmuseum in Harderwijk. The exhibition was a huge success. The large number of visitors and enthusiastic responses showed that the audience had fallen for the work of Marius van Dokkum. And Marius in turn fell for the city of Harderwijk, with its beautiful squares, streets and monuments. He felt so at home that together with the City Museum he went looking for a suitable location where he could permanently show his work.

His eye fell on one of the most beautiful buildings in Harderwijk, the former cutting room of the University of Harderwijk. Here, at the time, the professors dissected under the watchful eye of their student bodies during the so-called anatomical lessons. This striking historic location has been given a new and unique destination after a thorough renovation: a museum dedicated to the work of a living artist.
