Artist of the day, December 2: Adrian Sommeling, Dutch photograph and digital manipulation

Adrian Sommeling was born in Holland and he’s currently living in a small city close to The Hague. He has more than 20 years experience in the advertising world, in fact he had his own small advertising agency from 1992 till 2008, when he decided to concentrate on making photos. His work has been published in magazines all over the world, from China, to Europe till the USA.  Adrian Sommeling didn’t start off as a photographer, on the contrary he was working in the advertising industry since the 1990’s. Within this time frame, he was able to work with international brands as well as national governments. Sommeling in the process was a graphic designer developing marketing materials but also delved into web design. After collectively gathering these skills, he was able to get away from the oil paint and canvas moving onto what we call “Photoshop”. His main passion is geared towards creating imagery. A typical day for him is easily working on multiple assignments from different magazines, ad agencies or just personal work.

We can easily say he is juggling multiple assignments but one thing he doesn’t forget is his wife and son. His son is probably the most routinely used model in his work, quite frankly, he is the inspiration. Children possess one thing that is intangible when we grow up: limitless imagination. They do not know the dangers that we experience when we grow up. They do not see things in black and white. They dream everyday about imagery that is highly unrealistic but empowering. This is his style of shooting, reaching deep into the strings of your locked memories and dragging them back out to play those chords once again. Sommeling doesn’t have any particular way of shooting, though he does call it “The American Style”. He doesn’t just work for the goal of creating commercial art, he is also in the area of helping his fellow artists. One of the many things you discover is how he gives back to the community. Sommeling is able to capture each image at their peaks and blends them together seamlessly together in one composition. He is a seasoned photographer but more importantly, a seasoned father.
