Eric Yahnker (1976) is a contemporary artist born in Torrance, California. His humorous, meticulously rendered graphite and colored pencil drawings and elaborate process pieces examine pop culture and politics.
He studied journalism at the University of Southern California before earning his BFA at the California Institute of the Arts in 2000. During his second year at CalArts, he worked on the storyboard for South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut. After he graduated he drew and directed Seinimation, a series of short animated bonus features on DVDs of Seinfeld’s last four seasons.
Describing his work as “long-form, visual, comedic poetry” and “glorified political cartooning,” the artist continues to use his unique background to create heroically-scaled installations, most often anchored by wall-sized, photorealistic drawings utilizing charcoal, graphite, and colored pencils. Leaning heavily on pop-culture imagery combined with cinematic, political and historic references in order to magnify broader social truths, Yahnker was described by the New York Times’ Ken Johnson as “an exceptionally imaginative satirist [who] is also an ambitious, prolific and technically impressive draftsman.” Yahnker has been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States and Europe.
