Francisco Mata Rosas, (1958) is considered one of the most influential Mexican photographers of his generation. “His works covers many of the relevant themes of the country’s recent history, from the 1990s conflict in Chiapas to the archetypes of the Mexican collective imaginary,” notes Giuseppe Oliverio, founder and CEO of the Photographic Museum of Humanity. Among his best known work is the series “La Linea,” in which he narrates the political and human conflicts that characterize the border between Mexico and the U.S.
Francisco Mata Rosas studied Communication Sciences at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana-Xochimilco 1979-1983. And the Master in Visual Arts at UNAM. He worked as a photojournalist for the newspaper La Jornada de México, 1986-1992. His photographic work has been published in several of the main newspapers and magazines in the United States, Spain, Canada, Italy, France, England and Mexico. His photographs have been exhibited in: Mexico, Holland, Germany, Italy, Spain, France, England, United States, Scotland, Japan, Argentina, Brazil, Panama, Uruguay, Ecuador, Peru, Honduras, Cuba and Costa Rica, to mention only some spaces.
Awards: Acquisition Prize at the Mexican Photography Biennial, 1988. Honor Prize at the Bicentennial Competition of the French Revolution, Mexico-France, 1989. Young Creators Grant from the National Fund for Culture and the Arts, Mexico, 1989. Third Mother Jones Fund for Documentary Photography USA, 1993. Prize for the Promotion and Co-investment of the National Fund for Culture and the Arts, 1994 and 1999. Artistic Residence at the Museum of Fine Arts of Orleans, France, within the framework of the 5th Recontres Photographiques d'Orleáns, Une Saison Mexicaine. October-November, 2004. Honor of Distinction in Photojournalism, Black an White Spider Awards, 2006 It belongs to the National System of Creators of Mexico from the year 2000.
Francisco Mata Rosas has given various workshops as well as more than 100 conferences on the subject of photography, image, new technologies, multimedia, post-photography, etc. in important festivals, museums and academic institutions in the United States, Mexico, England, Argentina, Spain, Brazil
