Artist of the Day, December 18, 2020: NOH Suntag, a Korean photographer (#1175)

Korean photographer NOH Suntag (1971), who works in both North and South Korea, is interested in the ambivalences and breaches within and between these two societies: their mirroring relationship, the military presence and ideological extremes on both sides, the relationship between the individual and the masses, and violent situations that penetrate everyday life in the South as well as the North, which are as subtle as they are open.

NOH Suntag explores the way in which gone by Korean War alive and well in today’s Korean society. He looks intently the gap in the ‘power of division’ that oftentimes interprets things to its own advantage as it includes war and division in the fixed chapter of history. The power of division is a monster of present operating and malfunctioning in both South and North Korea. Taking all those oozing from that monster – spit and thick blood, madness and silence, benefit and damage, burst of laughter and cynical smile, and stop and flow – in the form of image and words, he lets them slide by. With such disruption holding up that monster dreaming permanent state of exception, he tries to reveal politics of today.

The ambivalence finds its counterpart in NOH’s unconventional photographic aesthetics, which combines the documentary with the fictional, the snapshot with strict composition. His series of black-and-white as well as color photographs, which are usually developed over a number of years, scrutinize the conflict situations in contemporary Korean society. The image of Korea NOH develops in the process is one of a permanent state of emergency. This Series shows works produced between 2000 and 2007.
