Artist of the Day, September 6, 2021: Jeff Jamison, an American painter (#1357)

Jeff Jamison (1958) grew up in Middle Tennessee where he became interested in art at an early age. He found art in unexpected places.  "Like a lot of Americans that grew up when I did, I was obsessed with sports, playing organized football and baseball and dreaming of one day playing professionally.  When I wasn't playing sports I would find myself daydreaming about playing and drawing sports imagery while I dreamed."

His serious art studies began at Middle Tennessee State University where he studied pre-engineering and architectural drawing. He later graduated and earned his degree from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale.  Upon graduating, he immediately went to work as an Editorial Illustrator at the Fort Lauderdale Sun Sentinel newspaper where he honed his skills and learned the meaning of deadlines and versatility.  His accuracy and detail offered him entry to a world of representational art, even painting Western art for a short time.  His creativity also led him to glasswork design and freelance illustration.  Eventually deciding to convert to painting full time, Jamison utilizes his skills for drawing and scale combined with learned Old Masters techniques, calling his process “controlled chaos.”

Jamison applies his early football training and discipline to his work.  “Attempting to create quality, impactful art on a consistent basis is an extremely challenging thing to do.  I’m glad I have the discipline from athletics because every painting is game day.  I love being an artist, but probably what I really love is moving paint around on a canvas and thinking.”

Jamison infuses a combination of nostalgia and timelessness into his paintings through use of a contemporary style. This might seem paradoxical, but it is what makes his works so enigmatic. They are beautiful and mysterious, light and carefree, and above all, they invite you to participate with your imagination. He is one of the gallery’s best-selling artists. The cities Jeff features might appear to be New York or Paris - many paintings are in fact the cities of his dreams - mash-ups of places he has been and places he wishes to go.  Because of the ambiguity of people and places, his work offers something to everyone.

Jeff’s painting talent has earned him both regional and national recognition; he has been featured in numerous magazines, and his paintings can be found in private and corporate collections throughout the United States and Europe.
