Artist of the day, October 17: John Cooney, a Northern Irish painter, watercolor artist (#814)

John Cooney is an artist living in Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland. He has achieved a first class honours degree in illustration after attending art college in Belfast and Manchester.

While at college, he won first prize at the North West Artists exhibition sponsored by BP. After college he began exhibiting his paintings with Tom Caldwell Galleries and won awards at the Royal Ulster Academy. Despite these successes he began working in advertising which left no time for painting.

After further career moves in graphic design he began teaching various art classes. John has stopped teaching now in order to devote himself entirely to painting. He paints in both oil and watercolours.

John´s work has been featured in Artists and Illustrators magazine and he has exhibited at The Royal Society of Portrait Painters at the Mall galleries, London. He will also be exhibiting again at the Royal Ulster Academy exhibition at the Ulster Museum.
